The Tiara and the Broom - FlashFictionFriday
The princess stood in the tower’s uppermost room. She had been trapped in the tower for over ten years. Tonight would be the night she broke the curse and got out. She read the words from the magic tome out loud and she could feel the magic flowing through her and into the room.
She had found the tome shortly after she had been imprisoned and had studied the book ever since. There wasn’t anything else to do in her imprisonment. She never knew if the book had been left on purpose or not, but it held the key to her freedom.
The magic started to form above her head, it looked like a dark green swirling, thunderstorm. ‘It’s working! I will be free!’ she thought to herself, nearly breaking concentration on the spell. ‘Focus!’
As she continued to recite the words from the old book, the spell started to thunder in the tiny room. Green lightning came from the spells clouds. Once she reached the end of the spell, a bright flash of green blinded her and everything went quiet and still.
“Did it work?” she asked no one, hardly daring to believe it. She rushed down to the bottom of the tower, and stopped in front of the entry door. She spent years trying to pry the door open. It had been magically sealed when they left her here and nothing she did affected the door. She was so scared to try the door. What if the spell failed? She’d be stuck here forever. What if the spell worked? She had no idea where she was or what was outside. But if it did work, she could finally put her plan in motion.
She put her hand on the knob, took a deep breath, and turned. The door opened and the sun shone into the room for the first time in over a decade. She could smell the fresh air and could hear birdsong.
She was free!
It was finally time, she could get her revenge on the people who put her here. She grabbed the black cloak that she had made, her tiara, and her broom. The witch got on her broom and flew off into the day. Everyone would die.

The inspiration for this story came from this youtube short
I would love to see this idea fleshed out more. I think that it could be made into a novel or even two novels. Act 1 is the princess and her life leading up to her imprissonment. Act 2 would be her solitude in the tower, finding the book, and learning sorcery. Act 3 would be her breaking out, destroying everyone, and her and the reader realizing she has become an evil witch. I think throughout act 2 we could watch her mental landscape shift from goody goody princess to evil witch. Steal the idea if you want, I have no idea if I’ll come back to it or not.
